82-year-old Ipoh retiree and his vintage car celebrates Merdeka with us.

As National Day is just around the corner, every Malaysians are all hyped up in a patriotic and festivity mood. Every year, Petronas celebrates it with us through a commercial film, this year was no different.

This retired 82-year-old Ipoh local, Lawrence Lau Kee Yoke and his precious black vintage car, was featured in this year’s Merdeka Day webfilm for Petronas’ A Walk Through Time.

This group of vintage car lovers that gathers around together every Sunday At the Perak Stadium for a drive with their vintage beauties was lucky enough to be found by the production.

Lau can be seen in a scene where an elder is driving in MG TF, which he bought 46 years ago from Scotsman. While some of his other friend’s cars was featured as well such as Morris Minor and an old Austin 7.

Reminiscing the old days, Lau said things had changed for the better now.“In the old days, I joined car clubs, but it was hard to race with the Europeans as they used to look down on Asians,” he recalled.“Now, there is no segregation. They accept you and vice versa,” he added. “Things were different during the colonial days.”

Some of the country’s most iconic moments were featured in this year’s webfilm, such as, the Independence Day in 1957, the formation of Malaysia, a cinema playing the popular P. Ramlee’s movie Laksamana Do Re Mi and Malaysia’s win at the Thomas Cup in 1992.

A Walk Through Time’s story is about the friendship of two boys and their journey of different eras in Malaysia as the country transforms together with Petronas.

What’s even more interesting about this year’s webfilm is that it’s also a tribute to the late director Yasmin Ahmad. The barber scene where the Indian boy on the bike waved at the two boys is actually a direct reference from the past Petronas’ Merdeka Day commercial – Little Indian Boy.

Street Artist creates mural for Old Town Coffee in Ipoh.

Street artist Ernest Zacharevic spotted at Ipoh creating yet another mural similar from many before in Penang(click here for Penang's mural ), except this time it's in Ipoh!

Zacharevic has partnered up with with OLDTOWN White Coffee Malaysia in celebration of the heritage and history that is shared between Ipoh, Old Town and OLDTOWN White Coffee. In conjunction with this collaboration, Zacharevic will use his unique artistic creativity to paint seven murals to celebrate Ipoh, Old Town, the birthplace of white coffee.

OLDTOWN has grown to become the leading white coffee manufacturer in Malaysia ever since the company introduced its own 3-in-1 products back in 1999. This success is firmly rooted in the proud coffee tradition and culture that has made Ipoh, Old Town so iconic. OLDTOWN remains true to its heritage, providing only the most authentic flavor and nostalgic aroma to Malaysians all over the country.

Mr. Lee Siew Heng, Group Managing Director of OLDTOWN Berhad said, “Our white coffee is prepared using an original recipe which has been passed down through the generations. Although we have grown so much over the years, the key secret to our success is our ability to maintain the originality and authenticity of the white coffee recipe. We also preserve the traditions and practices that have played such an important role in the shaping of Ipoh, Old Town’s coffee culture. With mutual heritage and history between OLDTOWN and white coffee, it is indeed very timely for us to celebrate Ipoh, Old Town, where it all began.”

In line with the ‘Art of Old Town’ campaign, each art piece will draw inspiration from the elements from the Ipoh and Old Town and their shared origins.

This partnership project's mural art pieces will each be inspired from the Ipoh and Old Town along side with their shared origins. Bringing locals and foreigners that visit to have a little taste of Ipoh's art and culture.

Zacharevic says, “Ever since I first visited Ipoh, Old Town I’ve been touched by how cozy and intimate the town is. Its architecture, culture, food and people have continued to captivate and inspire my heart and soul. I’ve wanted to come back to Ipoh, Old Town, take my time, soak in its rich culture and heritage and perhaps leave my mark here. I was truly honored and amazingly excited when Old Town approached me to make this a reality.”
“Whenever I meet someone from Ipoh, Old Town, I am amazed by how humble yet proud people are of their hometown. I share the exact same feeling when I get to know OLDTOWN. They have grown so successfully, yet never neglected its roots, heritage and most importantly the people who helped it succeed. I am really proud to collaborate with OLDTOWN White Coffee to bring my artwork to Ipoh, Old Town and hope to make this beautiful place even more inspiring than it already is now.”

Clearly the talented artist, has also became one of those foreigners that fell for Ipoh's many charms.

The campaign will take place till 26 June 2014.
As a teaser to this project, Zacherevic has painted a mural in Jalan Bijih Timah last April.
